Anime and Manga are a part of the Japanese society that have a universal appeal. Anime is basically short for animation, while manga are printed books similar to comic books. Since I started learning about Anime and Manga I have found that they have a much further reach than the country of Japan. Both have been translated into English(in the U.S. and the U.K.), Spanish, Italian, and French. And those are only the ones that I am aware of from my research. Some Anime and a few Manga are available in the United States, with more coming every day, from local comic stores and video retailers. Regarding Anime, I have one recommendation for everyone:
No offense to the North American seiyuu, but the Japanese are much better
voice actors. I have seen several series subtitled and dubbed, the subtitled
are always better. The companies always say that the dubs outsell the subs,
but just listen to both and you will hear the difference. Apparently if
an Anime is subtitled it is considered a foreign film, if it is dubbed it
is not. There are some good castings for dubbed voice actors I must admit.
But no North American Seiyuu will ever be as good an Amano Ai-chan as Hayashibara Megumi! If you have
a choice buy the subtitled version, hearing the original cast and music will
be well worth it.

Strictly speaking, they are just what the name suggests: comic books written for girls. In practice, though, shojo Manga is used to refer to a broad range comic books targeted at both girls and women.
